The chill frog screensaver, explained
What is the Pepe frog meme?
Pepe the Frog is a cartoon character created by artist Matt Furie, who introduced him in his comic Boy’s Club in 2005. A panel with the line “feels good man” spread across online forums in the late 2000s, and the frog became one of the internet’s most widely shared reaction images. This screensaver borrows only the relaxed, pond-side mood, with an original cartoon frog of its own.
Is this the original Pepe character?
No. Pepe is a copyrighted character created by Matt Furie. The frog here is an original cartoon drawn with JavaScript on an HTML5 canvas: a round green frog with pink cheeks and a wide smile. It is not Pepe, not a copy of that artwork, and not affiliated with or endorsed by its creator.
How do I run it fullscreen?
Click the scene, press Enter Fullscreen or press F. Move the mouse to show the Exit Fullscreen and Pause buttons, which hide again 2.5 seconds after the mouse stops, or press Esc (or F again) to leave. Where a browser blocks the fullscreen API, the scene fills the browser window instead. The page does not keep the display awake, so set your screen’s sleep timer to Never if it should keep running.
What does the scene show?
An original cartoon frog sits on a lily pad, breathing gently and blinking about every 4.5 seconds, while fireflies wander and pulse over the water. Rings ripple out across the pond at random, the water shimmers, and short captions such as “stay chill” and “...ribbit.” fade in and out at the top. Everything is drawn live on an HTML5 canvas; there is no sound.
