Guide — a quiet candle-lit tribute, fullscreen
An original cartoon gorilla sits by a flickering memorial candle and two bananas while short tribute words drift upward. Four scenes, nothing to install.Choose Vigil, Jungle, Starlit or VHS, or press 1 to 4. Starlit sets the word rate to 5, the others to 4.
Drag Word rate from 1 to 10. A new word rises about every 1.5 seconds at 1 and every 0.4 seconds at 10 (about 1.1 seconds by default); each drifts up for 3.6 to 5.4 seconds, with at most 10 on screen.
Toggle the Tribute words (or press W), the Memorial candle, the Banana offerings and the Scanlines.
Press Enter Fullscreen, click the scene or press F. Move the mouse to show the Exit Fullscreen and Pause buttons, or press Esc to leave.
Space or Pause stills the gorilla and the candle and stops new words; words already rising finish their drift. R or Reset Defaults returns to Vigil.

The Harambe tribute, explained
What is the Harambe meme?
Harambe was a western lowland gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo. On 28 May 2016, the day after his 17th birthday, a three-year-old boy climbed into his enclosure and zoo staff shot Harambe to protect the child. His death led to a wide public debate about zoo safety and keeping great apes in captivity, and then to a long-running wave of online tributes and memes. This screensaver keeps to the gentle side of that: a quiet, candle-lit vigil.
Is this the real photo of Harambe?
No. The gorilla is an original cartoon drawn with JavaScript on an HTML5 canvas, not a photograph. No photos or footage of Harambe are used.
What does it show?
An original cartoon gorilla sits calmly, breathing gently and blinking every few seconds, beside a flickering memorial candle, with two bananas left as offerings. Short tribute words, picked at random from nine (among them “rest in peace”, “never forget”, “gone too soon” and “we remember”), drift slowly upward like embers. The candle, the bananas and the words can each be switched off.
How do I run it fullscreen?
Click the scene, press Enter Fullscreen or press F. Move the mouse to show the Exit Fullscreen and Pause buttons, which hide again after 2.5 seconds, or press Esc (or F again) to leave.
