The Doge meme, explained
What is the Doge meme?
Doge is built around a 2010 photo of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu from Japan, giving the camera a sideways, half-suspicious look. In 2013 the photo became a huge meme, surrounded by short phrases of broken “doge-speak” such as “much wow” and “very concern” in multicoloured Comic Sans; the same year it inspired the Dogecoin cryptocurrency. This screensaver is a playful original tribute to that look.
Is this the original Doge photo?
No. The dog here is an original cartoon Shiba Inu drawn with JavaScript on an HTML5 canvas, not the original photograph. It captures the side-eye and the Comic Sans doge-speak without reproducing the original image.
What is doge-speak?
Doge-speak is the meme’s deliberately broken English: “such”, “much”, “very”, “so” and “many” in front of words that don’t belong there, plus a lone “wow”. The screensaver draws from 15 phrases, such as “such wow”, “much cute”, “very 2013” and “many pixels”, each in one of eight bright colours at a random size. Every phrase drifts and fades for 2.4 to 4 seconds around the dog, with at most 14 on screen at once.
How do I run it fullscreen?
Click the scene, press Enter Fullscreen or press F. Move the mouse to show the Exit Fullscreen and Pause buttons, which hide again after 2.5 seconds, or press Esc to leave. Where a browser blocks the fullscreen API, the scene fills the browser window instead. The page does not keep the display awake, so set your screen’s sleep timer to Never if it should keep running.
