Loituma Girl and Leekspin, explained
What is Loituma Girl?
“Loituma Girl”, also called Leekspin, is a looping Flash animation that spread widely in 2006. It repeats a few frames from the anime Bleach in which the character Orihime Inoue twirls a leek, set to the fast a cappella scat section of the Finnish folk song “Ievan Polkka” as sung by the Finnish vocal group Loituma, who gave the meme its name. This page is an animated tribute.
Is this the original animation?
No. This is a cartoon tribute drawn with JavaScript on an HTML5 canvas. It contains none of the original artwork or the recording, and there is nothing to download or install.
Does it play the song?
No. The page makes no sound at all and does not play Loituma’s recording. With Karaoke lyrics on, short sing-along lines appear one at a time at the bottom of the screen, changing every 1.5 seconds, so you can hum along yourself.
How is it related to Nyan Cat?
They share a format: a small character animation looping forever over a simple background, paired with a catchy, repetitive song. Nyan Cat appeared in 2011, five years after Leekspin, so the two are often mentioned together as classics of that looping style. The Rainbow scene here nods to Nyan Cat’s rainbow trail.
What can I customise?
Switch between the Classic, Rainbow, VHS and Night scenes, set the spin speed (1 to 10) and how fast the background scrolls (0 to 10), and toggle the karaoke lyrics, the floating music notes and the scanlines. Reset Defaults (or R) restores Classic with spin 6 and scroll 5.
