Chocolate Rain, explained
What is Chocolate Rain?
“Chocolate Rain” is a song written and performed by Tay Zonday, uploaded to YouTube in 2007. His strikingly deep voice and the plain, homemade look of the video turned it into one of the biggest viral hits of the early YouTube era, endlessly parodied that summer. It is especially remembered for the on-screen caption “I move away from the mic to breathe in”.
Does this play the actual song?
No. This is a visual tribute drawn from scratch on an HTML5 canvas: falling chocolate-brown rain, a silhouetted singer and the famous caption. It contains none of the song’s recording, melody or lyrics. The optional Deep ambient hum is an original low drone of two sine tones generated live with the Web Audio API; it fades in over about a second and a half, keeps playing while the animation is paused, and stops when you switch it off.
What is the caption about?
In the original video, the words “I move away from the mic to breathe in” appeared on screen each time Tay Zonday leaned back from the microphone to take a breath. The caption became one of the most quoted lines of the early internet. Here the singer leans back for about two seconds out of every seven, and the caption fades in at the bottom of the screen while he does; press C to hide it.
How do I run it fullscreen?
Click the scene, press Enter Fullscreen or press F. Move the mouse to show the Exit Fullscreen and Pause buttons, which hide again after 2.5 seconds, or press Esc to leave. Where a browser blocks the fullscreen API, the rain fills the browser window instead. The page does not keep the display awake, so set your screen’s sleep timer to Never if it should keep running.
