Badger Badger Badger, explained
What is Badger Badger Badger?
It is a looping Flash animation from 2003 by Jonti Picking, better known as Weebl: a row of cartoon badgers bobbing up and down to a chant of “badger badger badger”, interrupted by “mushroom, mushroom” and, eventually, a snake. It became one of the defining early internet memes. This page recreates the idea as a browser screensaver.
Is this the original Flash animation?
No. The original was made in Adobe Flash, which browsers no longer run. This is a tribute redrawn from scratch on an HTML5 canvas with JavaScript, so the badgers keep dancing on any current device with nothing to install.
Does it play the song?
No, the original Weebl track is not included. Turn on Groove beat (sound) for a simple kick-drum and hi-hat rhythm generated live with the Web Audio API; its tempo follows the Dance Speed slider (104 to 176 BPM) and it stops while the dance is paused. Sound is off by default.
Where's the snake?
The first snake appears about 8 seconds after the page opens and slithers from right to left in 3 seconds while the screen shouts “SNAAAAKE!”. After that it comes back every 17 seconds at the lowest Snake Frequency setting, down to every 2 seconds at the highest. Press S to summon one instantly, or turn Snake events off to stop it.
What can I customise?
Switch between the Classic, Disco, VHS and Night scenes, set the number of badgers (4 to 14), the dance speed and the snake frequency, and toggle the mushrooms, snake events, flashing lyrics, scanlines and the optional beat. Reset Defaults (or R) restores Classic with 11 badgers and sound off.
