With Windows 11 23H2 in 2023, Microsoft first brought Copilot and AI features to Paint, Photos, Snipping Tool and Clipchamp. A lot has changed since. Here's which AI features you'll find in Windows 11 today and what you need for them.
Copilot in Windows is no longer a sidebar but a regular Copilot app. Version 23H2 no longer gets updates for Home and Pro; update to the latest version of Windows 11. Which AI features you get depends on your PC and your region.
The Copilot app
- Copilot is now an app you open from the Start menu, the taskbar or the Copilot key on newer keyboards.
- The old Win + C shortcut for the sidebar no longer works as it did in 23H2; behavior may differ per version.
- With a work or school account you use Microsoft 365 Copilot or Copilot Chat, with protection for your business data.
Paint
- Remove background and layers for everyone.
- Create images with AI (formerly Cocreator) and generative erase. You sign in with a Microsoft account; some features only work on a Copilot+ PC or use credits.
Photos
- Blur, remove or replace the background with one click.
- Generative erase to remove distracting elements.
- On Copilot+ PCs, features such as Super resolution to sharpen photos.
Snipping Tool, Clipchamp and Notepad
- Snipping Tool: copy text from a screenshot (text actions), redact sensitive data and screen recordings with sound.
- Clipchamp: automatically compose a video from your photos and clips.
- Notepad: saves your tabs automatically and on supported PCs can rewrite or summarize text with AI.
What is a Copilot+ PC?
A Copilot+ PC has a powerful NPU chip for AI on the device itself. That unlocks extra features such as Windows Studio Effects for the camera, Click to Do and improved search. On a regular PC, most basic AI features work via the cloud.
For admins
