Saving an error message, sharing part of a web page or making a short video of your screen: Windows 11 has it all built in. With the Snipping Tool you take screenshots and screen recordings, and you can even copy text from an image. This article lists every shortcut.
The shortcuts
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | Snipping Tool: choose rectangle, freeform, window or full screen |
| Print Screen | Also opens the Snipping Tool by default |
| Windows + Print Screen | Full screen, saved straight to Pictures > Screenshots |
| Alt + Print Screen | Only the active window, to the clipboard |
| Windows + Shift + R | Start a screen recording with the Snipping Tool (in recent versions) |
| Windows + Alt + R | Record an app or game with Xbox Game Bar |

The Snipping Tool
- After a screenshot, a notification appears at the bottom right. Select it to edit: draw, highlight, crop.
- With Text actions you copy text from the screenshot, or automatically hide email addresses and phone numbers.
- Screenshots are saved automatically to Pictures > Screenshots. Turn that off in Snipping Tool settings if you don't want it.
Make a screen recording
- Open the Snipping Tool and choose the video icon, or in recent versions press Windows + Shift + R.
- Select the area of the screen and select Start. Optionally turn on your microphone and system sound.
- Select Stop. The video is in Videos > Screen Recordings.
