Self-Service Password Reset in Microsoft Entra ID

"I forgot my password" is one of the most common helpdesk requests. With Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) in Microsoft Entra ID, users reset their own password after an extra check via the Authenticator app, text message or email. This article shows how to turn on SSPR, which methods to choose and how it works with on-premises Active Directory.

What do you need?

Turn on SSPR

  1. Go to entra.microsoft.com > Protection > Password reset.
  2. Under Properties, choose Selected (a test group) or All.
  3. Under Authentication methods, choose how many methods are required: one or two. Two is safer.
  4. Under Registration, require users to register when signing in.
  5. Under Notifications, notify users and admins when a password is reset.
