When you create a team you choose its privacy: public, private or org-wide. That choice decides who can find the team and who can join. Below you'll find when to choose which.
The three types
| Type | Who can join? | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Private | Only people an owner adds | Projects, customers, HR, management, anything sensitive |
| Public | Anyone in the organization can join themselves | Clubs, knowledge sharing, communities, general questions |
| Org-wide | Everyone in the organization is a member automatically | Announcements for everyone in smaller organizations |
How to decide
- Is there information not everyone may see? Choose private.
- Do you want colleagues to find and join the team themselves? Choose public.
- Must really everyone be in it automatically, and is your organization small enough? Choose org-wide. Only a Global Administrator can create one, and it only works up to a limited number of users.
In doubt? Start with private. You can change it later via Edit team > Privacy.
Be careful with public teams
- A public team's files can be found by everyone in the organization, including in Search and Copilot.
- A private channel inside a public team stays protected.
