A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts your internet traffic between your computer and the VPN server. That's useful on public Wi-Fi, when traveling or if you value your privacy. Which VPN should you choose for Windows 11? Below you'll find well-known services and, above all, what to look for yourself. Prices, server counts and features change constantly, so always compare current terms on the provider's official website.
What to look for
- A no-logs policy, preferably confirmed by an independent audit.
- Modern protocols such as WireGuard or OpenVPN, and strong encryption.
- Kill switch: blocks your internet if the VPN connection drops.
- Number of devices per subscription and apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.
- Speed and server locations you need.
- A trial or money-back guarantee so you can test first.
Well-known VPN services
- Proton VPN: Swiss, with a free tier without a data cap but with fewer features.
- NordVPN: large server network and extra security features.
- ExpressVPN: known for ease of use and speed.
- Surfshark: many devices at once with one subscription.
- CyberGhost: simple app with profiles for streaming or downloading.
- Private Internet Access (PIA): lots of settings and open-source apps.
Install safely
- Only download the app from the provider's official website or the Microsoft Store.
- Be careful with unknown free VPNs: if you don't pay, the provider may make money from your data.
- A VPN doesn't make you invisible. You still need good antivirus, updates and MFA.
VPN at work
On a work computer you don't pick a VPN yourself. Organizations often use a business solution, such as the built-in Windows VPN client managed with Intune, or newer access services such as Microsoft Entra Private Access. A personal VPN on a work device may violate your employer's policy.
