Microsoft Teams and WhatsApp compared

WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams look alike at first glance: you chat, call and share photos or files. Yet they're made for different things. WhatsApp is a messaging app for personal use and quick contacts. Teams is a collaboration platform for work, school and clubs. Teams now has a free version for personal use, which is also the successor to Skype, and WhatsApp is available on computers and the web as well as on phones. This article shows the differences and when to use which app.

Why not WhatsApp for work?

Many teams still use WhatsApp for work because it's fast and familiar. The downside: the organization has no visibility into what's shared, files sit on personal phones, and when someone leaves, the knowledge goes with them. With Teams you can even chat with people outside your organization, so there's less reason to switch.
