Copilot in SharePoint

With Copilot in SharePoint you create pages faster and find information on your sites more easily. You can also build an agent that answers questions based on a site's content. Copilot only works in SharePoint in Microsoft 365 (SharePoint Online), not in SharePoint Server 2019 or Subscription Edition. Features change quickly, so the exact buttons may differ from what's described here.

What do you need?

Create pages with Copilot

  1. Open your SharePoint site and choose New > Page.
  2. Pick a template or a blank page.
  3. Open the Copilot pane in edit mode.
  4. Describe what you want, for example: "Create a welcome page for new employees with info about IT, HR and our offices." You can also use an existing document as a starting point.
  5. Have Copilot rewrite text: shorter, more formal or in a different tone.
  6. Review the content and select Republish or Publish.

An agent for your site

An agent is an assistant that only uses the content of selected sites, libraries or files. Colleagues can then ask questions like "How many vacation days do I have?" based on your HR site.

  1. Open the site or document library.
  2. Select the Copilot icon, or select files and choose the option to create an agent.
  3. Give the agent a name, choose its sources and write short instructions.
  4. Share the agent with colleagues, for example in a Teams chat.

The agent respects permissions: users only get answers from files they're allowed to open.
