# What a chord pad is for

Most people who want to hear a chord progression are not trying to compose. They are trying to practise over one, or to find out what a progression they read about actually sounds like, or to keep a loop going while they work out a melody on top. A chord pad is the shortest path to that: sixteen buttons, every one of them a chord that fits, and a beat behind them.

The pads are not a chromatic chord picker. Pick a key and a mode, and the home row becomes the seven chords built on the notes of that scale, plus one borrowed chord too common to leave out. In a major key that is I ii iii IV V vi vii° and the flat-seventh chord that gives rock its modal cadence. In a minor key it is i ii° bIII iv v bVI bVII and the major V — the borrowed dominant that makes a minor key sound like it has come home.

The eight pads underneath are the colour row, and they are where songs actually go once the diatonic seven start to feel small. Four are secondary dominants — the V chord of some other degree, borrowed to make that degree feel briefly like home. Four are modal interchange: chords lifted from the parallel mode. All sixteen still belong together, so there is still no wrong pad to press — the colour row just costs a little more tension.

And when the chord you want is not any of them, + ADD CHORD puts it on the grid: any of the twelve roots against twenty-three qualities, from a plain triad to a minor-major seventh. Those pads sit in their own group and behave like every other pad. The sixteen are the chords that fit; the ones you add are the chords you want.

# Why the same four chords keep turning up

The progression the internet calls the axisI–V–vi–IV, or C–G–Am–F in the key of C — carries an implausible share of the pop canon. It works because of what the four chords share. C and Am differ by one note. F and Am differ by one note. C and F share a note, C and G share a note. The progression can wander a long way from home and still keep a common tone underfoot, so it never sounds like it has jumped. Rotate the same four chords to start somewhere else and you get the other three progressions everyone knows: vi–IV–I–V, IV–I–V–vi, V–vi–IV–I. That is why one chord pad covers so much ground. # Voice leading, and why block chords sound like a toy

Play C then Am then F as three root-position triads and it sounds mechanical, because every note in your hand jumps at once. A player does not do that. They keep whatever notes the two chords have in common where they are and move the rest the shortest distance available. That is voice leading, and it is most of the difference between a chord machine and a keyboard player.

This page does it for you. Every time a chord changes, it tries each inversion across three octaves and keeps the one whose notes sit closest to the notes that were already sounding, with a gentle pull back toward the middle of the register so nothing crawls off the end of the keyboard. You do not have to know it is happening; you just notice that the loop sounds like someone is playing it.

# The colour row

A secondary dominant is the trick behind almost every progression that sounds like it briefly changed key and came back. Take any chord in the key, work out what its own dominant would be, and play that first. In C major the ii chord is Dm, and the dominant of D is A major — a chord with a C♯ in it, nowhere near the key of C. Play A → Dm and the Dm lands like a tonic. The pads label these V/V, V/vi, V/ii and V/IV, read as "five of five", "five of six".

V/IV is the odd one. Its root is the tonic, so as a plain triad it would be an exact duplicate of pad 1 — the flat seventh is the entire chord. It is therefore always a dominant seventh, and it is the gospel and blues move that turns the tonic into a launchpad for the IV.

Modal interchange is the other four: borrowing from the parallel mode, the one with the same tonic and the opposite third. In a major key you get iv (the minor fourth — the single saddest chord available to a major key), bIII, bVI and bII, the Neapolitan. In a minor key you get the brightening ones instead: a major I (the Picardy third), a major IV, a Dorian ii and vi, plus the leading-tone vii° and V/bIII, the dominant that tonicises the relative major and is how a minor-key song reaches its bright section.

# Sevenths are not one thing

The 7th button does not add the same note everywhere, because a seventh is not the same chord everywhere. On the tonic of a major key it makes a major seventh. On the dominant it makes a dominant seventh, which is a different chord with a different job — it is the one that pulls back to the tonic. On the second degree it makes a minor seventh, and on the seventh degree a half-diminished. Turn the modifier on and play ii V I and you have the jazz cadence, spelled correctly, without knowing any of this.

The blues is the famous exception, and it gets its own switch. In a twelve-bar blues the I, the IV and the V are all dominant sevenths — C7, F7, G7 in the key of C. Played diatonically you would get Cmaj7 and Fmaj7, which is a lounge, not a blues. Loading the 12-bar preset turns BLUES 7ths on for you.

# The drum machine and the bass

The drum grid is sixteen steps of nine lanes, synthesised the same way an 808 or 909 does it: a pitch-dropping sine for the kick, filtered noise plus a tuned body for the snare, bandpassed noise bursts for hats and claps. Four kits, ten presets, and every step editable. Steps have three levels, because a hat pattern with no ghost notes sounds like a metronome.

The bass follows your chords automatically — you never program it. Pick a pattern and it works out the notes: root, root–fifth, an octave pump, an offbeat, or a walking line that uses each chord's own third, so it walks through a minor third over a minor chord. It is the layer that turns three chords into something that sounds like a band.

# Everything happens in the page

There are no samples and no audio files. Every sound here is built out of Web Audio oscillators and filters at the moment you hear it, which is why the page loads in one request and works on a plane. Nothing you play is sent anywhere, because there is nowhere to send it — there is no back end. The share link is not an upload either: the entire arrangement is encoded into the URL, so the link is the file.

Playing it
How do I actually use this?

Press PLAY, then hit pads. That is the whole thing. The drums and bass start immediately and the chord you last pressed is the chord that plays.

To build a loop that plays itself: click the first slot in The loop, then hit the pads in the order you want them. Each press drops that chord into the slot and moves the cursor along. When you get to the end, press PLAY and it repeats forever.

Why can't I play a wrong chord?

Because the pads are rebuilt from the key you chose. They only ever contain chords made from the notes of that scale, plus one deliberately borrowed chord. Change the key and every pad relabels itself; the shapes you have written into the loop follow, because slots store the scale degree, not the chord name.

That is also why transposing works instantly and why a preset progression sounds right in every key.

What does LATCH do?

Normally a chord stops when you let go of the pad. With LATCH on it keeps sounding until you press another pad, which is what you want if you are playing a melody with your other hand or looking at a chord chart. Press 0 or turn LATCH off to silence it.

Can I use my computer keyboard?

Yes, and the layout mirrors the pads. 18 play the home row and Q W E R T Y U I — the keys directly above them — play the colour row, so the two rows of pads sit under two rows of keys.

Space starts and stops, F toggles fullscreen, L toggles latch, 0 stops a latched chord, and the left and right arrows transpose by a semitone. Keyboard presses do not repeat while you hold a key down, so a held pad sustains rather than machine-gunning.

What does the fullscreen button do?

It strips the page back to the three things you need while actually playing — the transport, the pads and the loop — and lets the pads grow to fill the screen. Everything else, including the drum grid and the mixer, goes away; the drums keep playing, you just cannot edit them from this view.

Press F or Esc to leave, or use the button. It works on iPhones and iPads too: iOS has no real fullscreen for anything except a video element, so this is a layout change rather than a browser fullscreen, and the browser chrome stays visible there.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, and the pads are sized for thumbs — two columns of eight, which is a comfortable reach. The drum grid scrolls sideways rather than shrinking its steps to nothing. iOS will not make any sound until you touch the page once — that is a browser rule, not a bug, and the first tap on PLAY satisfies it.

The fullscreen button is worth using on a phone: it drops everything except the pads and the loop.

Chords and theory
What are the roman numerals under each chord?

They name the chord by its position in the key rather than by its letter. I is the chord built on the first note of the scale, V on the fifth. Capitals are major, lower case minor, and a small circle means diminished.

The point of them is that they transpose. "I–V–vi–IV" describes the same progression in every key, which is why every book and every forum post writes progressions this way.

Why is the eighth pad different in major and minor?

Seven pads cover the scale, so the eighth — the last of the home row — is spent on the chord you would otherwise miss most.

In a major key that is bVII — the major chord a whole tone below the tonic. It is not in the scale, but rock and folk lean on it constantly, and it gives you the Mixolydian cadence.

In a minor key it is the major V. Natural minor's fifth chord is minor, and a minor v resolves weakly. Raising its third — borrowing from harmonic minor — gives the strong pull back to the tonic that almost every minor-key song actually uses.

Why does the 7th button give different chords on different pads?

Because that is what a seventh is. Stacking another scale note on top of each triad produces a major seventh on degrees I and IV, a dominant seventh on V, minor sevenths on ii, iii and vi, and a half-diminished on vii. They are four different chords with four different sounds and four different jobs.

A tool that added the same interval everywhere would give you chords that are not in the key. This one does the diatonic thing.

What is the BLUES 7ths switch?

It forces every major chord's seventh to be a dominant seventh instead of the diatonic one. That is exactly how the blues works: in a twelve-bar in C the chords are C7, F7 and G7, all three of them dominant, which is harmonically "wrong" and is the entire point.

Loading the 12-bar blues preset switches it on. Turn it off again for anything else.

Are the chord names spelled correctly for the key?

Yes, and it matters. The fourth chord of F major is B flat, never A sharp, even though they are the same key on a piano. Flat keys are spelled with flats and sharp keys with sharps, following the standard key signatures, so what you read here matches what you would read in sheet music or a chord chart.

What is voice leading and why should I care?

It is the practice of moving each note of a chord the shortest distance to the next chord instead of jumping the whole shape. It is the difference between a chord machine and a keyboard player.

This page chooses the inversion of each chord that sits closest to the chord before it. You do not control it and you do not need to think about it — it is why the loop sounds smooth rather than like a sequence of unrelated blocks.

What is the colour row?

The eight pads below the separator. They are not in the scale, but they are the chords songs actually reach for once the diatonic seven start to feel small, and they all resolve back into the key.

Four are secondary dominants — labelled V/V, V/vi, V/ii, V/IV. Each is the dominant chord of some other degree, borrowed so that degree briefly feels like home. Play V/V then V and you will hear it.

Four are modal interchange — chords lifted from the parallel mode. In a major key that means the minor iv, bIII, bVI and the Neapolitan bII. In a minor key it means the brightening ones: a major I, a major IV, and the Dorian ii and vi.

What does "V/V" mean?

"Five of five" — the dominant chord of the dominant. Work out the V chord of your key, then work out what its V would be, and that is the pad.

In C major, V is G, and the dominant of G is D major. D major has an F♯ in it, which is not in C at all — but play D then G and the G arrives sounding like a destination. That is the whole point of a secondary dominant: it borrows the pull of a key change without the commitment.

Why is V/IV always a seventh chord?

Because its root is the tonic. As a plain triad it would be an identical chord to pad 1, so the pad would do nothing. The flat seventh is the chord — C7 rather than C — and that seventh is what pulls it to the IV.

It is the gospel and blues move that turns a resting tonic into a launchpad. The chord modifiers are ignored on this pad for the same reason.

Can I play chords outside the key?

Yes — press + ADD CHORD and pick any of the twelve roots against any of twenty-three qualities. It appears as its own pad in a "Your chords" group below the other sixteen, and behaves like any other pad: playable, writable into the loop, exported, and carried in the share link.

So the sixteen key pads are the chords that fit, and the ones you add are the chords you want. Eight custom pads at a time.

I want an A minor but there is no Am pad

Then you are in a key that does not contain one. Am is the vi of C major and the ii of G major, but in D major or E major it is simply not a chord of the key, so no pad holds it.

Two ways out. Change the key — Am appears the moment you pick one that contains it. Or press + ADD CHORD, choose A and minor, and it becomes a permanent extra pad regardless of key.

Does a chord I add follow the key and the transpose?

It follows transpose but not the key, and the split is deliberate.

You named a specific chord, so switching from C major to F major leaves it exactly as you named it — the pad still says Am. Transpose is different: it means "play this whole arrangement higher", so everything moves together, custom chords included, or the song would fall apart.

The little numeral above a custom pad does update with the key, so you can always see where your chord sits in whatever key you are in. Am reads VI in C and V in D.

What happens to my loop if I delete a custom chord?

Any bar that was playing it is emptied, and every bar pointing at a later custom chord is renumbered so it keeps playing the same chord. Deleting the first of two never silently swaps the second one into its place.

An emptied bar just holds whatever chord came before it, as any empty slot does.

Drums, bass and sound
Where do the drum sounds come from?

They are synthesised, not sampled. The kick is a sine wave whose pitch drops sharply; the snare is filtered noise plus a tuned triangle body; hats and claps are short bursts of bandpassed or highpassed noise; the metallic kits build their hats from six square waves through a bandpass, which is roughly how a 909 does it.

That is why the page is one file with nothing to download.

What are the three brightness levels in the drum grid?

Velocity. Clicking a step cycles it through ghost, normal and accent before switching it off again. Ghost notes are what stop a hi-hat line sounding like a metronome, and an accented backbeat is what makes it feel like a drummer rather than a grid.

Do I have to program the bass?

No — it reads the chords. Pick a pattern and it works out the notes for whatever chord is playing at the time. The walking pattern uses each chord's own third, so it walks through a minor third over a minor chord and a major third over a major one.

Set it to "No bass" if you would rather play the bass part yourself.

What does the Space slider do?

It sends the chords and the drums through a convolution reverb — the signal is folded against a synthesised impulse response of a small room. Turned right down everything is dry and close; turned up the chords bloom and sit further back. It is deliberately subtle: it is there to stop the synth sounding like it is in a box, not to be an effect.

A convolution reverb has no feedback path, which matters more than it sounds. This started life as a delay network, and two of its connections accidentally formed a loop at full gain — the sound climbed until the limiter flattened it. A convolver cannot do that, whatever you set the slider to.

Why doesn't it distort when everything is playing at once?

Because there is a compressor and a soft-clip limiter on the master output. Twelve chord voices, a bass and nine drum lanes will comfortably sum past the point where a browser starts clipping harshly; the limiter rounds those peaks off instead. If you push every level to 100 you will hear it working.

What is swing?

It delays every second sixteenth note, so pairs of notes stop being even and start being long-short. At 0% the grid is straight; around 55–66% you are close to a shuffle or a jazz triplet feel. It applies to the drums, the strumming and the bass together, which is the only way it sounds right.

Saving, sharing and exporting
How does the share link work without an account?

The entire arrangement — key, mode, transpose, tempo, swing, the progression, every drum step, both instruments, both patterns and all five levels — is compressed into the URL after the #. Nothing is stored anywhere. Opening the link rebuilds the state locally.

It also means the link cannot rot: there is no server to shut down and no database entry to expire.

What is in the MIDI file?

A standard format-1 MIDI file with three tracks: chords, bass, and drums on channel 10 using General MIDI drum note numbers, plus the tempo. Every DAW will open it. Since MIDI carries notes rather than sound, you can drop it into your project and play it back with real piano and drum samples.

The file is written by hand in the page — no library, no upload.

What is in the WAV file?

Exactly what you hear, rendered offline at your browser's sample rate — usually 44.1 or 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo. Choose how many times the loop repeats before you export. Rendering is faster than real time, so a four-bar loop repeated eight times takes a second or two.

Can I use what I make here in my own music?

Yes. Chord progressions are not copyrightable, the sounds are synthesised here rather than licensed from anyone, and the files you export are yours. Use them in a track, a video, a lesson or anything else, commercially or not.

Does it save my work if I close the tab?

Your current arrangement is kept in your browser's local storage and comes back when you return, on that browser. For anything you want to keep properly, copy the share link — that is the portable version, and it works on any device.

About the tool
Is any of this uploaded?

No. There is no back end. The page loads, and from then on every chord, every drum hit and both export formats are produced by your own browser. The only network requests after load are the font and a privacy-first analytics ping that counts the page view and nothing else.
