Your organization has a new name, but your SharePoint and OneDrive addresses still show the old one, such as oldname.sharepoint.com. Can you change that? Yes: with a SharePoint domain rename (tenant rename) you change the address. It's a big change though.
What changes?
- The address of all SharePoint sites and OneDrives, for example from oldname.sharepoint.com to newname.sharepoint.com.
- Your email addresses and the name of your Microsoft 365 organization do not change. You manage those separately through your domains.
The steps
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, add a new .onmicrosoft.com domain with the name you want (Settings > Domains).
- Install the SharePoint Online Management Shell and connect as a SharePoint admin.
- Schedule the rename, at least a few days ahead:
Start-SPOTenantRename -DomainName "newname" -ScheduledDateTime "2026-11-15T22:00:00" - Follow the status with
Get-SPOTenantRenameStatus.
What to watch out for
- Old links keep working for a while through redirects, but not always in apps and scripts.
- OneDrive sync, shortcuts, Power Automate flows, Power Apps and third-party apps may need to be set up again.
- Large environments take longer and limits apply. Check Microsoft's requirements first.
- Tell users in advance and schedule the change outside working hours.
