Microsoft Designer is a design app with AI. You use it to create social media posts, invitations, cards and flyers by simply describing what you want. You can also create images and edit photos. Here's what the app does and how to start.
Microsoft Designer is no longer in preview and is free to use with a Microsoft account; you don't need a Microsoft 365 subscription. A paid subscription may give you more AI usage. Designer features are also in the Copilot app and in some Microsoft 365 apps.
What can you do with Designer?
- Create images with AI: describe what you want and pick from the results.
- Create designs: from a prompt, a template or a blank canvas.
- Edit photos: remove or blur the background, generative erase, restyle.
- Stickers, greeting cards, invitations and more, with fixed sizes for social media.
- Brand kit: save your own colors and fonts (depending on your version).

How to start
- Go to designer.microsoft.com or install the app on your phone. On Windows you'll also find Designer in the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Choose what you want to make or type a prompt, for example: An invitation for a team barbecue, summery colors.
- Pick a design, adjust the text, colors and images, and click Download.
Tips
- Choose the size first: square for Instagram, landscape for LinkedIn or a presentation.
- Let AI create a base and finish the details yourself.
- Upload your own photos or logo to make it personal.
- Don't use confidential images or documents at work.
With a work account
With a work or school account, access to Designer depends on your organization and license. When in doubt, ask your IT department which tools you may use. Also see edit photos with Microsoft Designer and create images with AI.
