The 5-minute typing test: stamina and job-style testing
Five minutes is the classic length for pre-employment typing tests. It shows the speed you can hold when your fingers tire and your attention drifts — which is why a 5-minute score is usually a few WPM lower than your one-minute best, and why employers trust it more.
This page uses real paragraphs with punctuation by default, like most job tests. Your headline figure is net WPM: only correctly typed words count.
Typing speed requirements for common jobs
| Role | Speed often asked for in job ads |
|---|---|
| Customer service, reception | around 35–45 WPM |
| General office, data entry | around 40–50 WPM with high accuracy |
| Administrative assistant, secretary | around 50–65 WPM |
| Legal or medical secretary | around 60–75 WPM |
| Transcriptionist, captioner | 70 WPM and more |
These are typical ranges seen in job postings, not fixed rules; the employer’s own test and accuracy threshold always decide.
How to prepare for a 5-minute test
- Build stamina gradually: two 3-minute tests a day for a week, then one 5-minute test a day.
- Keep your wrists floating and your shoulders loose — tension is what slows you down after minute three.
- Watch the speed chart: if it drops sharply in the last minutes, practise longer tests at a slightly slower, steadier pace.
- Keep accuracy above 95%. In most job tests, errors cost more than a few WPM of speed.
- Download the certificate afterwards as a record of your practice results.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ — 5-Minute Typing Test
What is a good 5-minute typing test score?
Over five minutes on real paragraphs, 40 to 50 net WPM is good for general office work, 50 to 65 is strong and 70 or more is excellent, with at least 95% accuracy.
Why is my 5-minute score lower than my 1-minute score?
A five-minute test measures stamina. Fatigue, harder passages and lapses in concentration lower your average, so a score 5 to 10 WPM below your one-minute best is normal.
Is this like a pre-employment typing test?
Yes, it follows the same format: five minutes of real paragraph text scored in net words per minute with an accuracy percentage. Individual employers may use different texts, rules for corrections and pass marks.
How many words do you type in 5 minutes?
About 200 words at 40 WPM, 300 words at 60 WPM and 400 words at 80 WPM.
Can I get a certificate for the 5-minute test?
Yes. Enter your name after the test and download a certificate with your WPM, accuracy, test length, date and result ID. It is self-administered, so present it as a practice result.
