Guide — a timed three-minute test
Choose a length (15 s to 5 min, or 10–100 words) and a text: common words, paragraphs, code, numbers, your weak keys or your own text.
The clock starts on your first key. Wrong letters turn red; Tab restarts, Esc stops.
WPM counts only correctly typed words. You also get accuracy, raw speed, consistency and a second-by-second chart.

3-minute typing test: net WPM, the way assessments score it
The 3-minute typing test used in schools and assessments
Three minutes is a common length for keyboarding classes, timed writings and employment screening. It is long enough that you cannot sprint through it, so it measures the speed you can actually keep up — while still being short enough to take several times.
This page starts with real paragraphs, the format most timed writings use. Your score is a net WPM: words with mistakes do not count, which is how many assessments score a test too.
What a 3-minute test result means

Many assessments also expect accuracy of 95% or higher. A high speed with 88% accuracy is usually marked down, so treat accuracy as part of the score.
Preparing for a timed typing assessment
- Practise on paragraphs with punctuation — real tests rarely use simple word lists.
- Take one test per day at the same time and track your 10-test average in Your progress.
- Practise with stop on error off and on: some tests let you correct mistakes, others do not.
- Warm up with two 30-second tests before the real thing.
Why do schools and employers use 3-minute typing tests?
Three minutes is long enough to show the speed you can sustain but short enough to take several times. That makes it a practical standard for timed writings and screening tests.
How many words do you type in a 3-minute test?
About 120 words at 40 WPM, 180 words at 60 WPM and 240 words at 80 WPM.
What is net WPM on a timed test?
Net WPM counts only words typed correctly, so mistakes lower your score. This test reports net WPM as the main figure and shows raw WPM, which counts every keystroke, next to it.
