Why take a 2-minute typing test?

A two-minute test is the sweet spot between a quick check and a full assessment. Over two minutes a slow start or a single messy sentence matters less, so your score is more reliable than a one-minute result while still being short enough to repeat.

By default this page uses real paragraphs with capitals and punctuation, the kind of text you actually write. Switch to common words above if you want to compare with a 1-minute test.

Typical 2-minute scores on paragraph text

    ResultMeaning
under 25 WPMBeginner — build the touch-typing habit first
25–40 WPMDeveloping — you type every day but still glance at keys
    40–55 WPMAverage to good
    55–75 WPMGood to fast
75+ WPMFast and accurate on real text

Paragraph text is harder than word lists, so these scores are usually a little lower than on common-word tests.

    Build consistency, not just speed

Look at the consistency figure and the speed chart after the test. A flat line means you type in a steady rhythm; spikes and dips mean you rush the easy words and stall on hard ones. Typists with high consistency almost always improve faster, because a steady pace keeps errors down.

    • Read a few words ahead so capitals and punctuation do not surprise you.
    • Type the shift key with the opposite hand to the letter.
    • If the chart drops after a mistake, practise carrying on calmly instead of rushing to catch up.

    FAQ — 2-Minute Typing Test

Is a 2-minute typing test better than a 1-minute test?

It is more reliable. Over two minutes one slow start or one hard sentence matters less, so your score is closer to your real everyday speed, while the test is still quick to repeat.

What is a good 2-minute typing test score?

On paragraph text, 40 to 55 WPM is average to good, 55 to 75 WPM is good to fast and more than 75 WPM is fast. On simple word lists expect a few WPM more.

How many words is a 2-minute typing test?

At 40 WPM you type about 80 words, at 60 WPM about 120 words and at 80 WPM about 160 words.

Why does this test use paragraphs?

Paragraphs contain capitals, punctuation and longer words, like real writing. That makes the result more meaningful for school and work. You can switch to common words with one click.

What does the consistency score mean?

It shows how steady your speed was from second to second. Above 80% means an even rhythm. A low score means you type in bursts, which usually leads to more mistakes.
