    The standard one-minute typing test

When someone asks “how fast do you type?”, they usually mean a one-minute WPM score. It is the most common test length online and in classrooms because it is quick, easy to repeat and long enough to smooth out a single stumble.

This test uses the most common English words so it measures pure typing skill. Add punctuation and numbers with the buttons above the text for something closer to real writing, or switch to paragraphs.

Tips for your best one-minute result

    • Look at the next word, not the one you are typing — your eyes should always be a word ahead.
    • Do not correct every tiny slip: in this test a mistyped word simply does not count, so keep your rhythm.
    • Keep your shoulders relaxed; tension makes fingers slower in the second half of the minute.
    • Take three tests and average them. One lucky run is not your real speed.

    After the minute

Your result card shows net and raw WPM, accuracy, consistency and a map of the keys you missed. Try a 2-minute test next for a steadier average, or practise stamina with the 5-minute typing test.

    Frequently asked questions

    FAQ — 1-Minute Typing Test

What is a good 1-minute typing test score?

About 40 WPM is average for adults, 50 to 70 WPM is good, 70 to 90 WPM is fast and more than 100 WPM is exceptional, as long as your accuracy is at least 95%.

How many words can you type in one minute?

That is exactly your WPM score. Most adults type about 40 words in a minute; touch typists usually manage 55 to 80.

Is 60 WPM good for a 1-minute test?

Yes. 60 WPM is well above average and enough for almost any office job. Above 70 WPM counts as fast.

How is the 1-minute score calculated?

The characters in correctly typed words, including spaces, are divided by five to get words, and that is your WPM because the test lasts one minute. Mistyped words do not count.

    Should I take a 1-minute or a 5-minute test?

Take the 1-minute test for a quick, comparable score. Take the 5-minute test if you are preparing for a job assessment or want to know the speed you can keep up.
