What a 30-second typing test is good for
Thirty seconds is long enough to measure your speed and short enough to repeat ten times in five minutes. That makes it ideal as a warm-up, for sprint practice and for checking whether a new technique is working.
Expect a slightly higher score than in a one-minute test: in half a minute you rarely lose focus or tire, and one clean start can carry the whole run. For a result that reflects everyday typing, use a 3-minute or 5-minute test.
How to use 30-second sprints to get faster
- Do five sprints in a row and write down the average, not the best.
- Push slightly beyond your comfortable speed for one sprint, then do one at a relaxed pace with 98%+ accuracy.
- Switch on stop on error for a sprint: it forces you to fix mistakes immediately and builds precision.
- Use the weak-keys text for your last sprint to target the letters that slow you down.
Good 30-second scores
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| under 30 WPM | Still looking at the keyboard — practise the home row |
| 30–45 WPM | Typical everyday typist |
| 45–65 WPM | Good, confident typing |
| 65–90 WPM | Fast |
| 90+ WPM | Very fast — try longer tests to confirm it |
Because short tests flatter speed, many people score 5 to 10 WPM lower over five minutes. That is normal.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ — 30-Second Typing Test
Is a 30-second typing test accurate?
It measures your speed well, but it tends to be a little optimistic because there is no time to tire or lose focus. Use it for warm-ups and quick checks, and a 3- or 5-minute test for a result you would put on a CV.
What is a good 30-second typing test score?
About 40 WPM is average, 50 to 65 WPM is good and more than 80 WPM is fast. Expect your longer tests to be a few WPM lower.
How many words can you type in 30 seconds?
At an average 40 WPM you type about 20 words in 30 seconds; at 60 WPM about 30 words; at 100 WPM about 50 words.
Why is my 30-second score higher than my 5-minute score?
Short tests reward a clean start and never test stamina. Over five minutes fatigue, harder words and small lapses of attention lower the average. A gap of 5 to 10 WPM is normal.
How can I use 30-second tests to improve?
Do several sprints in a row, alternating one push slightly above your comfortable speed with one relaxed, very accurate run. The weak-keys mode makes a good final sprint.
