A profile photo in Microsoft Teams

Your profile photo in Microsoft 365 shows up everywhere: in Teams, Outlook, SharePoint and next to every comment you post. A clear photo helps colleagues and external contacts see who they're talking to. This article shows how to change your own photo, how an admin updates a user's photo in the admin center or with Microsoft Graph PowerShell, and what happens when you work as a guest in another organization.

Note. Older commands such as Set-UserPhoto are being phased out by Microsoft. Use Set-MgUserPhotoContent from Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Change your own profile photo

  1. In Teams, select your profile picture or initials at the top right.
  2. Select your picture again (or Change picture).
  3. Select Upload picture, pick a photo and select Save.

You can also do it from your profile at myaccount.microsoft.com or in Outlook on the web. The new photo usually appears in Teams within minutes, but can take up to a day in other apps.

Use a square photo of at least 648 by 648 pixels, with your face centered, and keep the file under 4 MB.

Change a user's photo as an admin

  1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center > Users > Active users.
  2. Select the user and then the circle with their initials or current photo at the top.
  3. Choose Change photo, upload the image and save.

With Microsoft Graph PowerShell

Handy for setting photos for many employees at once, for example from a folder with one photo per email address:

Install-Module Microsoft.Graph.Users -Scope CurrentUser
Connect-MgGraph -Scopes "User.ReadWrite.All"
Set-MgUserPhotoContent -UserId "ann.peeters@contoso.com" -InFile "C:\Photos\ann.peeters.jpg"

For a whole folder:

Get-ChildItem C:\Photos\*.jpg | ForEach-Object {
    $upn = "$($_.BaseName)@contoso.com"
    Set-MgUserPhotoContent -UserId $upn -InFile $_.FullName
}

You need the User Administrator role or higher. Check a photo with Get-MgUserPhoto -UserId ann.peeters@contoso.com. See also change a UPN with Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Your photo as a guest in another organization

When you work as a guest in a customer's or partner's Teams, you have a separate guest account there. Other users in that organization often see only your initials, because your photo lives in your own organization. Switch to that organization in Teams (through your profile picture) and try changing your photo there. If that doesn't work, the organization restricts photo changes by guests and only their admin can set your photo.

Restrict changes by users

Want only HR or IT to manage photos, for example for a consistent company style? An admin can restrict users from changing their own profile photo through the Microsoft 365 profile photo settings or the Exchange Online mailbox policy. Communicate it clearly so employees know who to contact.
