Why Split a PDF Here?

Splitting is the one operation with no quality cost. Pages are copied out of the source document as-is. Nothing is re-encoded, so images keep their original resolution, vector graphics stay vector, and the text layer travels with the page. An extracted page is byte-for-byte the page you started with — which is why splitting is always safe in a way that compressing never is.

How page ranges work. Hyphens make ranges and commas separate selections: 1-5 is the first five pages, 3 is a single page, and 1-3, 7, 10-15 pulls three separate blocks into one output. Numbering follows the PDF page order starting at 1, which often differs from the printed page numbers once covers and front matter are counted.

What may not survive. Page content always does. Document-level features are less certain — bookmarks pointing at pages you did not extract cannot survive, internal links may break when their target lands in a different file, and form fields are sometimes flattened. For a plain document none of this matters; for a linked manual, check the output.

Split PDF Online — Extract Pages and Break Up Documents

Splitting is the one PDF operation that is completely lossless. Pages are copied out byte-for-byte into a new document — nothing is re-rendered, re-encoded or degraded, so an extracted page is pixel-identical to the original and its text stays selectable and searchable. Use it to pull a single signed page out of a contract, break a merged invoice bundle back into individual invoices, extract one chapter from a long manual, or cut an oversized file into email-sized pieces. Everything happens in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

How to Split a PDF — Common Situations

Extract one specific page from a long document

The most common case: you need page 7 of a 40-page agreement to send to someone, without forwarding the whole thing. Enter that single page number and you get a one-page PDF containing exactly that page, at original quality with its text layer intact. This is far better than screenshotting the page, which produces an image nobody can search or copy from.

Pull out a range of pages, such as a single chapter

Page ranges use plain notation: 1-3 takes the first three pages, 7 takes one page, and 1-3, 7, 10-15 combines several selections into one output. This is the fastest way to lift a chapter out of a manual, extract the appendix from a report, or separate the signature pages from a long contract bundle.

Break a document into every page as its own file

When you have scanned a stack of separate documents in one pass — receipts, forms, certificates — you end up with one PDF that should be many. Splitting into individual pages gives you one file per page, delivered as a ZIP so you are not clicking through dozens of downloads. Rename them afterwards and the filing is done.

Cut an oversized PDF into mailable pieces

If a file exceeds an attachment limit and you cannot compress it without wrecking the scan quality, splitting is the better answer. Two 8 MB halves both clear a 10 MB mail limit while staying pixel-perfect, whereas compressing a 16 MB scan down to 9 MB costs real legibility. Split first, compress only if you must.

Frequently Asked Questions — Splitting PDFs

How do I write page ranges?

Use hyphens for ranges and commas to separate selections. 1-5 means pages one through five inclusive. 3 means just page three. 1-3, 7, 10-15 pulls three separate blocks into one output document. Page numbering follows the PDF’s own page order, counting from 1 — which is not always the printed page number, since covers and front matter often shift the two out of alignment.

Does splitting reduce quality or make text unselectable?

No. Splitting copies the original page objects into a new file without re-rendering anything. Images keep their original resolution, vector graphics stay vector, and the text layer is carried across intact, so the extracted pages remain selectable and searchable. This is the key difference from compression, which does rasterise pages.

Will the split files keep bookmarks, links and form fields?

Partially. Page content, images and text always survive. Document-level features are less reliable: bookmarks pointing at pages you did not extract cannot survive, internal links may break if their target page is in a different output file, and interactive form fields are sometimes flattened depending on how the original was produced. Check the output if a document relies heavily on internal navigation.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Only if it opens without a password in your browser first. A PDF with an owner password restricting editing can usually be processed, but one requiring a password just to open cannot be read at all until it is unlocked. Remove the protection in whatever application created it, then split the unlocked copy.

How are the output files named?

Extracted selections are named after the source document with the page range appended, so you can tell them apart without opening each one. When you split into individual pages, the set arrives as a single ZIP archive rather than dozens of separate downloads, which browsers tend to block anyway.

Is there a page or file size limit?

No limit is imposed. Documents of several hundred pages split fine on a normal computer. The practical ceiling is your device’s available memory, since everything is processed in the browser tab — a very large scanned file may be slow on a phone but is usually fine on a laptop.

Can I reorder or rotate the pages while splitting?

Not in the splitter itself — it extracts pages in their existing order. For reordering, rotating or deleting pages, use the page organiser, which gives you a visual drag-and-drop view of the whole document. Split first, then organise, or organise then split, depending on which is closer to your goal.

Are my files uploaded when I split them?

No. The entire operation runs locally in your browser with pdf-lib. Nothing is transmitted to a server at any point, which matters when the document you are cutting up is a contract, a medical record or an HR file. The page continues to work with your network disconnected.
