The three ways to split
A hyphen makes a range and a comma starts a new file. Use it to pull one page out of a contract or one chapter out of a manual.

Split a PDF online and extract pages, without uploading it
Split PDF cuts a PDF into smaller PDFs in your browser. Take out a single page, lift a chapter out of a long document, cut a file into equal parts, or burst it into one PDF per page. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on pages, and the file is never uploaded: the splitting happens on your own computer or phone.
Splitting is the one PDF operation that costs nothing in quality. The pages are copied into new files exactly as they are, so text stays selectable, images keep their resolution and the result looks identical to the original.
How to extract pages from a PDF
Open the PDF and stay on Page ranges. Type the pages you want and press Split PDF. A single number takes one page, a hyphen takes a range, and a comma starts a separate file. So 7 gives you a one-page PDF of page 7, 4-9 gives you pages 4 to 9 in one file, and 1-2, 15-16 gives you two files. Ranges outside the document, or written backwards like 9-4, are ignored; if nothing valid is left, you get a message asking for ranges like 1-3, 4-6.
Page numbers: the file's count, not the printed one
Page numbers count from the first page of the file. A book or report often starts its printed numbering after the cover and the table of contents, so "page 12" in the footer can be page 16 of the file. If your extract seems off by a few pages, check the page number your PDF reader shows in its toolbar rather than the one printed on the page.
Splitting into equal parts or single pages
Every N pages is the quickest way to undo a batch scan. Fed a pile of two-page forms through the scanner in one go? Set N to 2 and every form becomes its own file. One PDF per page does the same with N = 1. When a split makes more than one file, a Download all as ZIP button appears, which saves you from a long row of separate downloads, which browsers often block anyway.
Split a PDF that is too large to email
When a file is over an attachment limit, splitting is often better than compressing. Two halves of a 16 MB document both fit under a 10 MB limit while staying sharp and searchable, whereas compressing the whole thing redraws every page as an image and loses the text. Split first, and only compress when the parts are still too big.
What may not come along
What you see on a page always survives. Some document-level extras may not: bookmarks in the sidebar of a PDF reader are not carried into the parts, a link that jumps to a page in another part can no longer work, and fillable form fields may stop working. For a plain letter, invoice or scan, none of this matters.
Reordering, rotating or deleting instead
The splitter keeps pages in their original order. To move pages around, turn a sideways scan or drop a few blank pages while keeping one file, use Rotate PDF, which shows every page as a thumbnail. To put parts from different files back together, use Merge PDF.
Troubleshooting
"Cannot read PDF" nearly always means the file is encrypted, which includes PDFs that open without a password but block editing. Save an unprotected copy, or "print to PDF" from your reader, and split that. There is no limit on pages; documents of several hundred pages split quickly on a laptop, while a very large colour scan can be slow on a phone because the whole file sits in memory.
Private by design
Online splitters usually upload your file to their server. Here the open-source library pdf-lib does the work inside the browser tab, so the contract you are cutting up never leaves your device.
