Merge PDF Files Online — Combine Documents Into One

Merging appends whole pages from each source document into a single new file. Like splitting it is lossless — pages are copied rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution. The output size is roughly the sum of the inputs, which surprises people expecting a merge to also shrink things; if the combined file is too large for email, compress it as a second step. Drag the files into the order you want before merging, because the order on screen is the order in the finished document.

Lossless combiningPages are copied rather than re-rendered, so quality and the text layer are untouched.
You control the page orderDrag files into position before merging. Nothing is auto-sorted by filename or date.
No file or page limitMerge two documents or two hundred. Nothing is capped and no watermark is added.
Mixed page sizes are fineA4 and A3, portrait and landscape can coexist in one output and still print correctly.

How to Merge PDFs — Common Situations

Combine invoices or receipts into one submission

Expense claims and tax filings usually want a single attachment rather than fourteen. Drop all the individual PDFs in, drag them into date order, and merge. Because merging preserves the text layer, the combined document stays searchable — which matters if an accountant later needs to find a specific amount without reading every page.

Assemble a report from separately produced sections

Cover page from a designer, body from Word, financial appendix exported from a spreadsheet. Merging joins them in the order you set without re-rendering, so the designer’s vector logo stays crisp and the spreadsheet tables stay selectable. Get the order right on screen first — reordering after the fact means merging again.

Join a document that was scanned in several passes

Sheet-fed scanners often force you to scan in batches, leaving four files that should be one document. Merge them in sequence and you have a single archival file. If one batch came out upside down because the stack was fed the other way, fix that in the page organiser before merging rather than after.

Mix images and PDFs into a single file

If some of what you need to combine is photographs or screenshots rather than PDFs, convert those to PDF first, then merge everything together. Doing it in that order gives you control over page size and orientation for the images instead of accepting whatever the merge decides.

Why Merge PDFs Here?

Why is the merged file so large — doesn't merging compress?

Merging adds, it does not compress. The output is roughly the sum of the inputs because every page is carried over at full quality. People often expect a merge to also shrink things and are surprised by a 60 MB result. That is correct behaviour — you would not want a merge silently degrading your scans. If the combined file is too big to email, compress it as a separate second step.

Why are my files not sorted automatically by name?

Order is set before you merge, not after. The on-screen order is the page order in the finished document. There is deliberately no automatic alphabetical sort, because filename order and intended reading order disagree far more often than they agree — camera and scanner filenames especially.

What happens to bookmarks, internal links and form fields?

Page content, text and images always survive. Bookmarks are commonly dropped, internal links can end up pointing at the wrong page once everything is renumbered, and form fields may collide when two source documents use the same field names. Visual documents merge cleanly; interactive forms deserve a check — fill them first, or use the PDF form filler.

Frequently Asked Questions — Merging PDFs

How many files can I merge at once, and how many pages?

There is no imposed limit on either. Dozens of files and documents running to hundreds of pages merge without trouble on a normal computer. The constraint is device memory, since everything is held in the browser tab while processing — a very large batch may be slow on a phone. If you hit a wall, merge in two stages and then merge the results.

How do I control the order pages appear in?

The order of the files on screen is exactly the order they are written into the output. Drag them into position before clicking merge. Files are not sorted alphabetically or by date automatically, which is deliberate — filename order is frequently not the order you actually want.

What happens if the documents have different page sizes?

Each page keeps its own dimensions. A merged file can legitimately contain A4 portrait pages followed by A3 landscape ones; PDF supports mixed page sizes in a single document. It displays correctly and prints correctly, though your printer may ask how to scale the odd pages out. Nothing is stretched or cropped to force uniformity.

Will bookmarks, hyperlinks and form fields survive the merge?

Page content, text and images always survive intact. Document-level structure is less certain: bookmarks from the source files are commonly dropped, internal links may end up pointing at the wrong page once everything is renumbered, and interactive form fields can collide when two documents use the same field names. For a simple visual document this never matters; for an interactive form it might.

Why is the merged file so large?

Because merging adds, it does not compress. The output is approximately the sum of the inputs, since every page is carried over at full quality. This is the correct behaviour — you would not want a merge silently degrading your scans. If the result is too big to email, run it through the compressor afterwards as a separate step.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

Only files that open without a password. A document requiring a password to open cannot be read by the browser at all, so it cannot be merged until you unlock it in the application that protected it. Files with an owner password that only restricts editing will usually merge normally.

Can I remove pages while merging?

Not during the merge itself — it combines complete documents. If you only want part of a source file, split out the pages you need first, then merge the extract. Alternatively merge everything and delete the unwanted pages afterwards in the page organiser, which is often quicker for a couple of stray pages.

Are my documents uploaded to a server?

No. Merging happens entirely inside your browser using pdf-lib. Your files are never transmitted, stored or seen by anyone else, which is the practical reason to use a local tool when the documents are contracts, payroll or anything covered by GDPR. Disconnect your network after the page loads and it still works.
