Bedtime Story Generator — a calm story for tonight, read aloud
Your child is the hero, with their favourite animal as a friend. Pick a world, a gentle theme and a length, and tonight's story is written, with choices along the way if you like. It can be read aloud in a slow voice that gets softer at the end, followed by rain or waves. In English and Dutch, made on your device, no account.
9 worlds · 36 little adventures · 9 gentle themes · English & Dutch · all on your device
Guide — tonight's story in five steps
Type your child's name and favourite animal. If you like, add a brother, sister or friend, a name for the animal and the name of a cuddly toy, which turns up at the end.
An enchanted forest, a voyage through space, a kingdom under the sea, a castle in the clouds, a snowy mountain, a night train, a little lighthouse, a moonlight bakery or Dinosaur Valley. Each has its own night scene. 🎲 Surprise me picks for you.
Add a gentle theme such as being brave, saying thank you or a big day tomorrow. Choose short, medium or long. With Choose the path, your child decides what happens next. Tick three good things for a quiet moment at the end.
Read it yourself, or press 🔊 Read aloud. The sentence being read lights up, and the last part gets slower and softer. Calm mode shows only the story, and the night light turns it amber.
🫧 Breathe together with the glowing circle, let soft rain, waves or brown noise play for up to an hour, and turn the screen off. ☆ Keep the stories your child loves.

A personalised bedtime story, written for tonight
This bedtime story generator makes a calm, short story with your child as the main character. A favourite animal comes along as a friend, and maybe a brother, sister or a cuddly toy too. You choose one of nine dreamy worlds (an enchanted forest, space, the sea, a cloud castle, a snowy mountain, a night train, a little lighthouse, a moonlight bakery and Dinosaur Valley), an optional gentle theme and the length. The story is put together from pre-written passages that were made to be read aloud at bedtime: slow, warm and without anything scary. Every story ends with breathing, counting and a goodnight, so it guides towards sleep rather than away from it. It works in English and Dutch, and the Dutch Belgian voice is chosen first when your device has one.
Pre-written, not generated live
The passages in these stories were written in advance and checked for tone. The generator chooses which opening, adventures, theme scene, wind-down and ending you get, and puts your child's name and animal into the right places. Nothing is made up on the fly by an AI, and nothing is sent to an AI service or a server. That keeps the stories gentle and safe, with nothing strange or frightening at bedtime, and it means the page also works offline once it is loaded. Each story has a number. The same settings and number always give the same story, which is how 🔗 Link to this story and ☆ Keep this story can bring back a favourite exactly as it was.
Choose the path
In 🔀 Choose the path style the story pauses at each adventure and offers two possibilities, for example "Follow the sparkling stream" or "Climb the mossy hill". Children love to decide, and it makes them listen closely. When the story is being read aloud, the voice asks the question too, and continues as soon as you tap an answer. With a long story there are three choices, with a short one, one.
Read aloud in a calm voice
🔊 Read aloud uses the speech voices already on your phone, tablet or computer (the Web Speech API), so how it sounds depends on your device. Voices called "natural" or "enhanced" usually sound the most human; you can pick one from the list and set the speed. The story is read sentence by sentence and the current sentence lights up, so a child who is learning to read can follow along. With softer and slower at the end, the last sentences are read more slowly and more quietly, the way a parent's voice drops when a child is nearly asleep. Tap any sentence to continue from there. While a story is being read or a sound is playing, the page asks the device to keep the screen on.
Night scenes, breathing and screen off
Above every story a small night scene drifts quietly: fireflies in the forest, a rocket among the stars, jellyfish under the sea, a night train rolling through the hills, the beam of a lighthouse sweeping over the waves. The scenes are drawn in code, tinted with your child's favourite colour, and the animal friend keeps watch in the corner. 🫧 Breathe together opens a glowing circle that grows for four seconds while you breathe in and shrinks for six while you breathe out, five times, which is a slow rhythm that many children copy without being asked. 🌑 Screen off makes the page completely black, so the screen stops lighting the room while the voice or the sound carries on. Both can start by themselves after the story if you tick the boxes.
Calm mode, night light and sleep sounds
- ⛶ Calm mode goes full screen and shows nothing but the story, in large letters, with the controls faded until you need them.
- 🕯️ Night light turns the whole story amber on black, without blue or white, which is easier on eyes that are getting ready to sleep.
- A− / A+ change the text size; your choice is remembered.
- After the story, soft rain, slow waves or brown noise can play for 10 to 60 minutes and fade out over the last minute. The sounds are generated live in the browser from filtered noise, so there are no audio files to download.
Tips for a calm bedtime routine
Many children fall asleep more easily when the evening follows the same order: bath, pyjamas, teeth, a story, lights out. Keeping the story at the same moment every night, in a dim room, makes it part of that signal. A short story is often enough on a busy evening, and a long one with the counting and the "sleepy body" ending is good when sleep is slow to come. The themes can help with what is on a child's mind: a big day tomorrow for first-day nerves, big feelings after a hard day, saying thank you to end on something warm. The optional three good things moment turns the end of the story into a tiny ritual of its own. If your child has a favourite, press ☆ Keep this story. Hearing the same story again is something many young children love.
More about the bedtime story generator
Is the story written by an AI?
No. The stories are put together on your device from passages that were written in advance and checked for tone. Nothing is made up on the fly, and nothing is sent to an AI service or a server. That keeps every story gentle, with nothing strange or frightening at bedtime.
What age are the stories for?
They are written for children of roughly 3 to 9: short sentences, slow pacing, and always a calm ending in bed. For the youngest children choose a short story; for school-age children a long one with the counting and the sleepy-body ending works well.
How long does a story take?
A short story takes about 3 minutes to read aloud at a slow bedtime pace, a medium one about 4 minutes and a long one about 5 minutes. The exact length is shown above each story.
Can it read the story aloud, in English and Dutch?
Yes. Read aloud uses your device’s own speech voices, so how it sounds depends on your phone or computer. Pick a natural or enhanced voice from the list if you have one. In Dutch, a Belgian voice is chosen first when your device has one. The last sentences are read more slowly and softly, and the sentence being read lights up.
What is the breathing guide?
A glowing circle that grows while you breathe in for four seconds and shrinks while you breathe out for six, for five rounds. Press Breathe together at any time, or tick the box to have it start by itself after the story.
What does Screen off do?
It turns the page completely black, which on most phones and tablets means the screen stops lighting the room, while the voice or the rain, waves or brown noise carries on. Tap the screen to wake it. A web page cannot truly switch a screen off, so the page asks the device to stay awake while the black screen is showing.
What is the “three good things” moment?
An optional pause near the end of the story where the animal friend asks what was one good thing today, and then two more. You wait quietly while your child answers in a whisper. Many families use it as a gentle way to end the day on something good.
Is my child’s name stored anywhere?
Only in your own browser, and only if “remember these choices on this device” is ticked. Nothing is uploaded. A story link contains the settings, including the names, so only share it with people you would tell those names to.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, the stories, the night scenes, the breathing guide and the sleep sounds all work without a connection, because they are made on your device. Voices come from your device too, though a few online voices need a connection.
