Weather in Flanders today: how to read the forecast
This dashboard shows the live weather for every town in Flanders, from De Panne on the coast to Maaseik on the Meuse. For each town it loads the current conditions, a forecast per 15 minutes for the next hours, per hour for 48 hours and per day for 14 days. The data come from Open-Meteo, which combines the forecasts of national weather services such as DWD, Météo-France and KNMI, including high-resolution models that cover Belgium in detail.
Rain: "chance of rain" versus millimetres
Two numbers describe rain and they mean different things. The chance of rain is the probability that at least 0.1 mm falls in that hour at your location. The amount in mm is how much is expected: 1 mm is one litre of water per square metre. A 30% chance with 0.2 mm is a passing drop; an 80% chance with 3 mm per hour is real rain. Light rain is under 2.5 mm per hour, moderate rain 2.5 to 7.5 mm and heavy rain above that. Showers in Flanders often come from the west with the sea wind, so towns on the coast usually get them first.
Feels-like temperature, wind and Beaufort
The feels-like temperature combines the air temperature with wind and humidity. At 5 °C with a wind of 30 km/h it feels close to 0 °C, which is why a windy day in Flanders feels colder than the thermometer says. Wind speed is shown in km/h and on the Beaufort scale: 4 Bft (20–28 km/h) is a moderate breeze that cyclists notice, 6 Bft (39–49 km/h) makes umbrellas hard to use, and from 8 Bft (62 km/h) there is a gale. Gusts are short peaks that can be twice the average wind. The arrow on the compass shows where the wind is going; the label says where it comes from, the way the weather service reports it.
UV index, air quality and pollen
The UV index runs from 0 to 11+. From 3 you should protect your skin around midday; in Flanders the summer maximum is usually 6 to 8. Air quality uses the European Air Quality Index from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service: up to 40 is good or fair, above 60 is poor. The bars compare particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), ozone and nitrogen dioxide with the 2021 WHO guidelines. Pollen counts are model forecasts in grains per cubic metre of air: alder and hazel start in late winter, birch peaks in April, grass from May to July, and mugwort and ragweed in late summer.
Sunrise, sunset, golden hour and day length
The sun arc shows where the sun is now between sunrise and sunset. The golden hour is the time when the sun is less than about 6° above the horizon, giving the warm, soft light photographers like; the blue hour follows sunset until the sun is 6° below the horizon. In Flanders the day lasts about 16½ hours at the summer solstice and just under 8 hours in late December, so around the equinoxes the day length changes by more than three minutes a day.
The climate of Flanders in numbers
Flanders has a mild maritime climate. At the reference station in Uccle (Brussels) the 1991–2020 normal is 11.0 °C a year, 837 mm of precipitation on about 190 days, and about 1,600 hours of sunshine. Rain is spread over the whole year, which is why it feels like it is always raining even though the total is modest. Recent years have broken records: 2022 was the warmest year in Uccle (12.2 °C), 2024 the wettest (1,170.7 mm), and on 25 July 2019 Begijnendijk reached 41.8 °C, the highest temperature ever measured in Belgium.
How the fun indexes are calculated
The indexes are a light-hearted score from 0 to 10 based on the current temperature, wind, cloud cover, humidity and the rain chance for the next six hours. The cycling score puts wind first (anyone who has cycled against a sea wind knows why), the BBQ meter and terrace index want warm, dry and calm weather with some sun, the laundry index wants dry air, a breeze and no rain, and the friet index rises when it is grey, chilly and damp. They are for fun; for safety warnings always follow the KMI.
Data, refresh and privacy
Weather and air-quality data come from Open-Meteo (open data from national weather services and CAMS) and refresh every 10 minutes while the page is open. Your location is only used in your browser to find the nearest town and is never sent to this site. Link to a town with ?city=gent and add &lang=nl for Dutch. For official warnings (code yellow, orange, red), check the Royal Meteorological Institute at meteo.be.

Het weer in Vlaanderen vandaag: zo lees je de weersverwachting
Dit dashboard toont het actuele weer voor elke gemeente in Vlaanderen, van De Panne aan zee tot Maaseik aan de Maas. Per gemeente laadt het de huidige toestand, een verwachting per kwartier voor de komende uren, per uur voor 48 uur en per dag voor 14 dagen. De gegevens komen van Open-Meteo, dat de verwachtingen van nationale weerdiensten zoals DWD, Météo-France en het KNMI combineert, met fijnmazige modellen die België in detail dekken.
Regen: neerslagkans versus millimeters
Twee getallen beschrijven regen en ze betekenen iets anders. De neerslagkans is de kans dat er in dat uur op jouw plek minstens 0,1 mm valt. De hoeveelheid in mm is hoeveel er verwacht wordt: 1 mm is één liter water per vierkante meter. 30% kans met 0,2 mm is een voorbijgaande drup; 80% kans met 3 mm per uur is echte regen. Lichte regen is minder dan 2,5 mm per uur, matige regen 2,5 tot 7,5 mm en zware regen meer. Buien komen in Vlaanderen vaak uit het westen met de zeewind, dus de kust krijgt ze meestal eerst.
Gevoelstemperatuur, wind en Beaufort
De gevoelstemperatuur combineert de luchttemperatuur met wind en vochtigheid. Bij 5 °C en een wind van 30 km/u voelt het rond 0 °C aan; daarom voelt een winderige dag in Vlaanderen kouder dan de thermometer zegt. De windsnelheid staat in km/u en op de schaal van Beaufort: 4 Bft (20–28 km/u) is een matige wind die fietsers merken, bij 6 Bft (39–49 km/u) wordt een paraplu lastig en vanaf 8 Bft (62 km/u) is het stormachtig. Windstoten zijn korte pieken die tot twee keer de gemiddelde wind kunnen halen. De pijl op het kompas wijst waar de wind naartoe waait; het label zegt waar hij vandaan komt, zoals de weerdienst het meldt.
UV-index, luchtkwaliteit en pollen
De UV-index loopt van 0 tot 11+. Vanaf 3 bescherm je je huid best rond de middag; in Vlaanderen is het zomermaximum meestal 6 tot 8. De luchtkwaliteit volgt de Europese luchtkwaliteitsindex van de Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service: tot 40 is goed of redelijk, boven 60 is slecht. De balkjes vergelijken fijnstof (PM2,5, PM10), ozon en stikstofdioxide met de WHO-richtwaarden van 2021. Pollen zijn modelverwachtingen in korrels per kubieke meter lucht: els en hazelaar beginnen eind van de winter, berk piekt in april, grassen van mei tot juli en bijvoet en ambrosia in de late zomer.
Zonsopkomst, zonsondergang, gouden uur en daglengte
De zonneboog toont waar de zon nu staat tussen zonsopkomst en zonsondergang. Het gouden uur is de periode waarin de zon minder dan ongeveer 6° boven de horizon staat, met het warme, zachte licht waar fotografen van houden; het blauwe uur volgt na zonsondergang tot de zon 6° onder de horizon staat. In Vlaanderen duurt de dag ongeveer 16,5 uur bij de zomerzonnewende en net geen 8 uur eind december; rond de equinoxen verandert de daglengte daardoor met meer dan drie minuten per dag.
Het klimaat van Vlaanderen in cijfers
Vlaanderen heeft een gematigd zeeklimaat. In het referentiestation in Ukkel is het normaal (1991–2020) 11,0 °C per jaar, 837 mm neerslag op ongeveer 190 dagen en zo'n 1.600 uur zon. De regen is over het hele jaar gespreid, daarom lijkt het altijd te regenen, al valt het totaal mee. De voorbije jaren sneuvelden records: 2022 was het warmste jaar in Ukkel (12,2 °C), 2024 het natste (1.170,7 mm), en op 25 juli 2019 haalde Begijnendijk 41,8 °C, de hoogste temperatuur ooit gemeten in België.
Zo worden de indexen berekend
De indexen zijn een speelse score van 0 tot 10 op basis van de huidige temperatuur, wind, bewolking, vochtigheid en de neerslagkans voor de komende zes uur. De fietsscore kijkt eerst naar de wind (wie ooit tegen de zeewind in fietste, weet waarom), de BBQ-meter en terrasindex willen warm, droog en rustig weer met wat zon, de wasindex wil droge lucht, een briesje en geen regen, en de friet-index stijgt als het grijs, fris en vochtig is. Ze zijn voor de pret; volg voor waarschuwingen altijd het KMI.
Gegevens, verversen en privacy
Weer- en luchtkwaliteitsgegevens komen van Open-Meteo (open data van nationale weerdiensten en CAMS) en verversen elke 10 minuten zolang de pagina openstaat. Je locatie wordt alleen in je browser gebruikt om de dichtstbijzijnde gemeente te vinden en wordt nooit naar deze site gestuurd. Link naar een gemeente met ?city=gent&lang=nl. Voor officiële waarschuwingen (code geel, oranje, rood) kijk je op meteo.be van het KMI.
