FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions about Recipe Scaler

Frequently Asked Questions — Recipe Scaler

How do I scale a recipe up or down?

Paste your recipe into the input area, set the original serving size, then enter your desired serving count or use the quick-scale buttons (x0.5, x2, x3). All ingredient quantities update automatically and proportionally. Non-ingredient lines like instructions pass through unchanged.

Can I scan a recipe from a cookbook photo?

Yes. Click the upload area or drag-and-drop an image of your recipe. The tool uses Tesseract.js OCR to extract text directly in your browser. No image is uploaded to any server — everything stays private on your device. A progress bar shows the OCR status.

Does the recipe scaler handle fractions like 1/2 cup or 1 1/2 cups?

Yes. The ingredient parser recognizes common fractions (1/2, 1/4, 3/4), mixed numbers (1 1/2), decimals (0.5, 3.5), and ranges (2-3). All formats are scaled proportionally and displayed as clean fractions when possible.

Can I convert between metric and imperial units?

Yes. Toggle the metric/imperial conversion switch. This converts cups to milliliters, ounces to grams, pounds to kilograms, tablespoons and teaspoons to milliliters, and Fahrenheit to Celsius — and vice versa. Conversions are applied on top of scaling.

How do I double a recipe quickly?

Paste your recipe, then click the x2 quick-scale button. All ingredient quantities instantly double. You can also manually set the desired servings to twice the original serving count.

How do I halve a recipe?

Paste your recipe and click the x0.5 quick-scale button. All quantities are cut in half. Fractions are displayed cleanly (e.g., 1 cup becomes 1/2 cup, 3/4 tsp becomes a rounded value).

What units does the ingredient parser support?

The parser recognizes: cups, tablespoons (tbsp), teaspoons (tsp), ounces (oz), fluid ounces (fl oz), pounds (lb/lbs), grams (g), kilograms (kg), milliliters (ml/mL), liters (L), quarts (qt), pints (pt), gallons (gal), sticks, cloves, pinches, dashes, and more. Plural forms are handled automatically.

Is my recipe data private and secure?

100% private. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your recipe text and photos are never sent to any server. OCR processing happens entirely client-side using Tesseract.js. No cookies, no tracking of your recipe data.

Can I print or copy the scaled recipe?

Yes. Use the Copy button to copy the plain-text scaled recipe to your clipboard (great for pasting into notes or messages). Use the Print button to open your browser's print dialog with a clean, printer-friendly layout.

Is this recipe scaler really free?

Yes, completely free. No account, no subscription, no ads, no watermark. It is one of the free browser-based tools at jasperbernaers.com. Use it as much as you want.
