Free online Markdown editor with live preview

This free Markdown editor lets you write Markdown and see it rendered as HTML in real time — entirely in your browser, with zero uploads. It supports headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, images, inline & fenced code blocks, blockquotes, GitHub-style callouts, footnotes, tables, task lists, front matter, math and horizontal rules, plus a full formatting toolbar with case conversion, alignment, special characters, emoji, automatic version history, keyboard shortcuts, word/character/line counts and reading time, sync scroll, and one-click export to HTML, Markdown or PDF. Your work auto-saves to your browser, so it's still here when you come back.

Write & preview

Type Markdown on the left and watch the rendered result update instantly on the right — drag the divider to resize, or switch to a single pane.

Toolbar & shortcuts

Insert headings, lists, tables, code blocks, math, footnotes, callouts and a table of contents from the toolbar, or use Ctrl+B/Ctrl+I/Ctrl+K. Lists continue themselves on Enter.

Export anywhere

Copy the rendered HTML, raw Markdown or rich text, download a styled .html or .md file, or print to PDF.

Private & offline

Everything runs locally — nothing is uploaded. Content auto-saves to localStorage, and version history lets you roll back earlier revisions.

How to use the editor

Start typing Markdown in the editor pane, or click Load sample to see every feature at once. Use the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts to insert formatting, the Outline panel to jump between headings in a long document, and the ≡ TOC button to generate a table of contents. Drag the divider between the panes to resize them, or use Code / Split / Preview to focus on one side. When you're done, copy the HTML, Markdown or rich text, or export to .html, .md or PDF. The options panel toggles word wrap, line numbers, synced scrolling and smart lists, and changes the font size.

Frequently asked questions

Is my content private?

Yes. Everything runs 100% in your browser. Your Markdown is never sent to any server. Content is auto-saved to localStorage so it persists between sessions on the same device.

What Markdown syntax is supported?

All common Markdown, plus extensions: headings (# to ######), bold (**text**), italic (*text*), strikethrough (~~text~~), links [text](url), images ![alt](url), inline code (`code`), fenced code blocks with language highlighting, blockquotes (>) and GitHub-style alert callouts ([!NOTE], [!TIP], [!IMPORTANT], [!WARNING], [!CAUTION]), footnotes ([^1]), ordered/unordered lists, task lists (- [ ] / - [x]), tables (pipe syntax), horizontal rules (---), YAML front matter, and inline/block math ($…$ / $$…$$).

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Ctrl+B bold, Ctrl+I italic, Ctrl+E inline code, Ctrl+K link, Ctrl+1…6 headings, Ctrl+F find & replace, Ctrl+S save as .md, Ctrl+D duplicate line, Alt+↑/↓ move a line, Tab/Shift+Tab indent, Ctrl+\ sidebar, Ctrl+P cycle Code / Split / Preview. On Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl — the full list is in the sidebar under All shortcuts.

How do I export my work?

Five options: Copy HTML and Copy Markdown copy to your clipboard, Download .html saves a complete HTML file, Download .md saves the raw Markdown, and Print / PDF opens your browser's print dialog to save a PDF.

Does it save my work automatically?

Yes. Your Markdown is auto-saved to your browser's localStorage as you type. When you reopen the page, your content is restored automatically. Clear it with the "Clear editor" button.

Can I navigate a long document quickly?

Yes. The Outline panel lists every heading in your document — click one to jump the editor and the preview straight to it. You can also insert a table of contents with the ≡ TOC button, and drag the divider between the panes to give either side more room.

Can I paste formatted text from a web page or Word?

Yes. Paste rich text and it is converted to clean Markdown automatically — headings, lists, links, tables and code all carry over. Paste a URL while text is selected and the selection becomes a link.

Is this completely free?

Completely free — no account, no subscription, no watermark, no ads, no usage limits. One of 166 free browser-based tools at jasperbernaers.com.

Does it recover my work if I lose an earlier version?

Yes. The 🕑 version history button in the toolbar captures a snapshot of your document about once a minute, stored only in your browser. Open it to see each snapshot's age and word count, and restore any of them — your current text is saved as a snapshot first, so you never lose work either way.

Can I insert emoji, special characters, footnotes or callouts?

Yes. The toolbar has dedicated buttons for an emoji picker, a special character picker (arrows, math symbols, Greek letters, typography), footnotes with auto-numbered references, and GitHub-style Note / Tip / Important / Warning / Caution callouts — all rendered live in the preview.
